Sundance Film Updates

Edit Center alums and teachers received awards, praise and deals at this year's Sundance Film Festival: The Cove, edited by TEC instructor Geoff Richman, won the Documentary Audience Award and was praised by Justin Chang of Variety: "Casting a very wide net, this powerful polemic is simultaneously a love letter to a beloved species, an eye-opening primer on worldwide dolphin captivity, a playful paranoid thriller and a work of deep-seated... moral outrage."; The Missing Person, edited by TEC alum Mollie Goldstein and a 2007 Edit Center class project, was well received at the festival and James Rocchi wrote on Cinematical that the film "isn't merely a clever, cool spin on the classic private eye story...It has the knowing, humane touches of Paul Auster's brilliant urban fiction."; Peter and Vandy, also edited by TEC instructor Geoff Richman and a 2008 Edit Center project, displayed one of the best female performances of the festival (Jess Weixler) states Steve Ramos of indieWIRE; Cold Souls (starring Paul Giamatti), in which TEC instructor Andrew Blackwell was the associate editor, was acquired by Samuel Goldman after the festival; Reporter, a 2007 class project, was reviewed by Eric Kohn of indieWIRE who writes, "With a series of gorgeous, frequently haunting sequences, Metzger captures the wide-ranging responses of struggling Africans." TEC Alums, Daniel Rosen and Bo Mehrad were the associate editor and additional editor, respectively, on Reporter.

 

TEC Alumni and Instructor, Academy Award Nominees

Congratulations to Alumni and Instructors for their films' 2008 Oscar nominations. Alum Udayan Baijal was the assistant editor on Slumdog Millionaire, which garnered 10 Oscar nomination. TEC instructor, Kate Williams, edited Frozen River (class film May 2007) up for Best Actress, Melissa Leo, and Original Screenplay, writer/director Courtney Hunt. The Betrayal (Nerakhoon), competing for Best Documentary, was post supervised by alum Riva Marker and Sharon Hughes was an assistant editor on the film.

 

The Winning Season Acquired by Lionsgate

The Winning Season, a project of the November 2008 class, has been picked up by Lionsgate after a successful premiere at Sundance. The film "...touches, in a surprisingly honest, unforced manner, on issues such as alcoholism, adolescent sexual confusion and broken homes, " Justin Chang of Variety. The film stars Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon), Rob Corddry (W.), Emma Roberts (Hotel for Dogs) and was co-produced by TEC alum, Riva Marker.

 

The New Twenty (Fast Company) Opens in NY

The New Twenty, formerly titled Fast Company and the project of the November 2006 6-week class, opens at NYC's Quad theater in March. The New Twenty, which Chuck Wilson of LA Weekly called "A sleek and accomplished debut film," was edited by TEC alum Todd Holmes and is being distributed by Wolfe Video. The film will also be broadcasted on MTV Logo, released on DVD in June, and can be viewed on video on demand through Warner Home Video.

 

Golden Globes Awards Update

Congratulations to TEC Alums/Instructors for their contributions to the following Golden Globe winners: TEC alum, Udayan Baijal, assistant editor on Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire, winner of Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score; Malcolm Jamieson, TEC instructor and editor of Mad Men, winner of Best Television Series Drama; Meg Reticker, TEC Instructor and editor of 30 Rock, winner of Best Comedic Television Series, Best Performance by an Actress In A Comedic Television Series (Tina Fey), and Best Performance by an Actor In A Comedic Television Series (Alec Baldwin)

The Missing Person Acquired by Visit Films

Visit Films has picked up worldwide rights to Noah Buschel's The Missing Person, the project of the Nov/Dec 2007 class. "We are excited to be working on The Missing Person with film-makers of such a high calibre," says Sylvain Tron of Visit Films, "Noah is a real talent and has created a film with such style that it stood out to us immediately." The Missing Person stars Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) and Amy Ryan (The Office, Gone Baby Gone), was edited by TEC alum Mollie Goldstein, and will premiere at Sundance this month.

 

Fall Speaker Series Ranges from Mad Men to Murderball

The Edit Center would like to extend our thanks to the speakers who visited our Fall 6-week classes: Malcolm Jamieson (Mad Men, Damages, Nurse Jackie), Geoffrey Richman (Sicko, Murderball, The Order of Myths), Jane Rizzo (Great World of Sound, Frontrunners). And a very special thanks to our alumni who were able to return as Visiting Artists and discuss their work: Erica Freed (Labor Pains) and Sandy Patch (senior colorist, Frame Frame Post). Fall classes also enjoyed tours of Soundtrack, a full-service sound post house and Postworks, a professional post production house.

 

Edit Center Alumni and Instructors' Films to Premiere at Sundance

Edit Center alums Michael Taylor and Mollie Goldstein both edited features that will be premiering in the Spectrum section of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Michael's movie, Against the Current, was directed by Peter Callahan and stars Joseph Fiennes, Mary Tyler Moore, and Michelle Trachtenberg. Mollie cut The Missing Person, directed by Noah Buschel and starring Michael Shannon (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) and Amy Ryan (The Office). The Missing Person was also an Edit Center class project. Michael and Mollie will be joined at Sundance by two Edit Center instructors who also have films in the festival: Anne McCabe, who edited Adventureland, and Andrew Blackwell, who was the associate editor on Cold Souls. Reporter is competing in the documentary category and was worked on by TEC alums Dan Rosen and Eric Finkelstein as associate editor and assistant editor, respectively.

 

Three Edit Center Class Projects Head to Sundance

Peter and Vandy, Reporter, and The Missing Person, all 2007-2008 Edit Center class projects, will be premiering at Sundance in January. Peter and Vandy, which was edited after the class by TEC instructor Geoff Richman, is competing in the narrative category and Reporter, directed by Eric Meztgar, will be screening in the documentary competition. The Missing Person, which was edited by Edit Center Alum Mollie Goldstein, will be part of the Spectrum section of the festival.
