Class Film on IFC's Best of 2009 list

The Missing Person, the project of the November 2007 six-week class, is listed as one the the "Best Films of 2009" by the editors at IFC.com. Of the main character, Alison Wilmore writes, "Rosow is a man out of time, à la Elliott Gould in The Long Goodbye…" The film premiered at Sundance last year and was edited by TEC alum/instructor Mollie Goldstein. TEC Alums and Instructors Headed to Sundance

Congratulations to the following alumni, instructors, and films who will all be competing in the Narrative category at Sundance 2010: The Dry Land edited by TEC instructor Sabine Hoffman (starring America Ferrara, Melissa Leo and Wilmer Valderrama); Sympathy for Delicious edited by TEC instructor Pete Beaudreau (directed by Mark Ruffalo and starring Orlando Bloom, Juliette Lewis and Laura Linney); The Imperialists Are Still Alive! edited by TEC alum Michael Taylor who was assisted by alums Lou Ford and Brian Fleischman.

 

Class Film to Premiere at Sundance

Winter's Bone, the project of the May 2009 six-week class, is one of sixteen films that will premiere in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The film was directed by Debra Granik, written by Granik and Anne Rosellini (Down to the Bone, Sundance 2004) and edited by TEC instructor Affonso Gonçalves who was assisted by TEC alums Naomi Goodman and Tory Stewart.

 

Gotham Award Nomination and Theatrical Release for Class Film

Noah Buschel has been nominated for a Gotham Award in the category of "Breakthrough Director" for his film, The Missing Person. The film was the project of the November 2007 6-week class and will hit NY and LA theaters November 20. It has been deemed a "delightfully strange noir" by New York Magazine and stars Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) and Amy Ryan (The Office, Gone Baby Gone). The Missing Person was edited by TEC alum/instructor Mollie Goldstein.

 

 

Class Film Opens in Theaters

Peter and Vandy, the project of the March 2008 6-week class, opens October 9 in NY and LA. Stephen Farber at The Hollywood Reporter writes that Peter and Vandy has "sharp writing and strong chemistry between the stars" and that Jess Weixler "is utterly radiant throughout the picture." The film was edited by TEC instructor Geoffrey Richman and stars Jess Weixler (Teeth, Alexander the Last) and Jason Ritter (Happy Endings, The Wicker Man).

 

Venice Premiere for Alums

Great Directors, a documentary directed by Angela Ismailos and edited by TEC alum Christina Buchard and TEC instructor Sabine Hoffman, premiered at the 2009 Venice Film Festival this summer to positive reviews. The film captures the essence and independent spirit of living auteurs such as: Bertolucci, Lynch, Haynes, Linklater, and Varda to name a few. Natasha Senjanovic of The Hollywood Reporter remarks that "... the editing smoothly ties the various stories together." The film was also assisted by alums Peter Schuette, Susan Cox, Connor Kalista, and Nick Bussey.

 

The Missing Person Acquired by Strand Releasing

The Missing Person, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Fest and stars Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) and Amy Ryan (The Office, Gone Baby Gone), was just snapped up by Strand Releasing. Strand acquired all U.S. rights to what has been called a "delightfully strange noir" by New York Magazine. The Missing Person was edited by TEC alum/instructor Mollie Goldstein and was the project of the November 2007, 6-week class.

 

Alum Films at Tribeca, "Must Sees"

Of all 86 films screening at Tribeca this year, 16 were selected as, "Must Sees" by NY Mag -- 2 of which, Cropsey and Racing Dreams, were worked on by TEC alums. Cropsey, a documentary which delves into the mysterious disappearance of kids on Staten Island in the 80's by the hands of a "bogeyman," was edited by alum and instructor Anita Gabrosek, co-edited by TEC instructor Pete Beaudreau, TEC alum and instructor Todd Holmes was an additional editor on the film and TEC alums Faisal Azam and Ben Stark were assistant editor and associate editor respectively. The documentary, Racing Dreams, follows kids competing in the World Karting Association's National Pavement Series. TEC alum, Matthew Hamachek, was one of the editors alongside TEC guest lecturers, Mary Manhardt and director, Marshall Curry.

 

Sundance Film Updates

Edit Center alums and teachers received awards, praise and deals at this year's Sundance Film Festival: The Cove, edited by TEC instructor Geoff Richman, won the Documentary Audience Award and was praised by Justin Chang of Variety: "Casting a very wide net, this powerful polemic is simultaneously a love letter to a beloved species, an eye-opening primer on worldwide dolphin captivity, a playful paranoid thriller and a work of deep-seated... moral outrage."; The Missing Person, edited by TEC alum Mollie Goldstein and a 2007 Edit Center class project, was well received at the festival and James Rocchi wrote on Cinematical that the film "isn't merely a clever, cool spin on the classic private eye story...It has the knowing, humane touches of Paul Auster's brilliant urban fiction."; Peter and Vandy, also edited by TEC instructor Geoff Richman and a 2008 Edit Center project, displayed one of the best female performances of the festival (Jess Weixler) states Steve Ramos of indieWIRE; Cold Souls (starring Paul Giamatti), in which TEC instructor Andrew Blackwell was the associate editor, was acquired by Samuel Goldman after the festival; Reporter, a 2007 class project, was reviewed by Eric Kohn of indieWIRE who writes, "With a series of gorgeous, frequently haunting sequences, Metzger captures the wide-ranging responses of struggling Africans." TEC Alums, Daniel Rosen and Bo Mehrad were the associate editor and additional editor, respectively, on Reporter.
